[She likes that Roy doesn't beat around the bush or play games. Thanks to his blunt demeanor and way of speaking, she doesn't have to guess around him. Roy will tell her exactly what he thinks as soon as he thinks it. It's so refreshing to her especially with a background of the lifestyles of the rich and the famous. There's always reading between the lines, reading tone, reading body language. She's good at it, but it's exhausting.
So she's happy to let go relax with Roy where she can simply be. She's happy he wants to go out for this picnic. The weather is looking lovely with some fluffy clouds coasting by. Alexis feels like a floral sundress that flirts with her upper thighs is only appropriate along with her floppy sun hat. She needs the protection from the sun. She wears wedged sandals and carried a big bag of goodies. As promised, she's brought wine, but as an athlete and football coach, she figures he could use more than wine and pastries.
She's got an assortment of sandwiches on different breads. There's pretzels and some freshly chopped up fruit. It's all the perfect picnic food. Alexis greets him with the biggest. The basket is hanging off her arm as she launches herself at him for a hug.]
[ It actually was a nice day out, which was surprising and made things that much easier for their picnic. They'd picked a local park with plenty of space, trees, and lots of grass. Roy being Roy he was dressed in the same attire he usually wore, black pants and slightly lighter colored black t-shirt. Under one arm was a large bag from the pastry shop and a rolled up blanket - he'd managed to find one specifically with a red checkered pattern on it. Because she'd said that's what she wanted, and details were important.
When she launches herself at him for a hug he opens up his free arm and wraps it around her tight, grinning widely because her enthusiasm was contagious. The brim of her sun hat smashes into his forehead during the hug and he chuckles a bit at that, and the popping the picnic cherry comment. ]
You look fucking great. [ He says as they pull apart, eyes taking her in appreciatively for a moment, then he gestures to the bag he's holding. ] I didn't know what you'd like best, and the clerk was a fucking snob about it so I got some of everything. You'll have pastries for weeks. [ There was no way they could eat all of the contents of that bag. He'd gotten a variety of tarts, tiny decorative cakes, eclairs, macarons, and chocolate croissants. ]
Let's find a spot to sit. [ He guides them to a spot beneath one of the larger trees and sets the bag down, then spreads the blanket out for them to sit on. ]
[The park is perfect for this. It's truly picturesque. It helps that the weather is lovely. It's sunny, but there's plenty of cloud coverage to keep it from being too hot. She's decided that Roy gives excellent hugs. Even with just one arm, she feels all warm and fluttery as she's pressed against him. She pulls back to beam up at him and adjusts her hat. The way he looks at her earns him a little twirl that makes her sundress flare out a little.]
So do you. Your all black is such a vibe. I got some good wine and sandwiches too! I figured you're going to need more than pastries.
[She affectionately oats his chest then settles her hand in the crook of his arm as they find a spot. She's excited for the pastries. Alexis nods in approval at the spot beneath the tree, but it's the sight of him spreading out the red checker blanket that makes her squeal.]
[ He grins at her compliment, considering how stylish she looks it's nice that she thinks the same of his all black attire. He can't remember the last time he wore actual colors. ]
That's brilliant, I'm fucking starving, thank you. [ He's glad she thought to bring actual food, it was kind of her and otherwise they'd only have had the combination of wine and pastries and that didn't quite cut it. ]
Of course I did, you can't have a proper fucking picnic without the red checkered blanket. [ He smiles at her, all too happy to be able to do something that's brought such an enthusiastic reaction from her. It's a large enough blanket for the both of them and for the food and wine they brought. As they sit down, Roy reaches into the bag and begins to set up the various pastries in front of them, they are in small fancy little paper containers with elaborate labels in looping cursive. ] I can't fucking tell which is which, but have at it. [ He'll make a little mental note if anything in particular ends up being her favorite, that way he could surprise her with it later, even if it meant dealing with the snobbish shop owner again. ]
[She's so excited about sitting on the blanket. She curls her legs underneath her then brushes her hand along the fabric. Her index finger traces the little squares. Roy starts laying out all the fancy pastries he's picked up with her in mind. There's so many there, more than they can possibly eat, but her chest swells with utter affection at this amazing man that's so thoughtful.
In turn, she pulls out the platter of different sandwiches and pops off the plastic container. She's also got two wine tumblers for the wine. She's chosen a nicely aged cab from a good vineyard and pours them both a healthy serving.]
The pastries are so pretty! [She hands him the wine and goes for a pink macaron first. She takes a bite and hums at the raspberry flavor that bursts in her mouth. It's so good that she offers the other half for him to taste.] Oh my god. You have to try this.
[ He watches her trace the pattern on the blanket and thinks it's adorable. He's been around enough people in the sports world that have massive egos and shallow priorities; enough to where when he meets someone that can appreciate the simple things (like a picnic) with enthusiasm it just melts his grumpy little heart. ]
Cheers. [ He raises the tumbler of wine toward hers before taking a sip, his brows raise a moment as he's shocked by how good it is. Apparently he's been drinking inferior wine most of his life, compared to this. ] Holy fucking hell that's good. You definitely know how to pick out good wine.
[ Roy takes the other half of the pink macaron and finishes it off. ] Godamnit, that snobby fucker was right, this is amazing. [ He reaches for one of the sandwiches next and takes a bite, watching as a few people and their dogs wander the park in the distance, then he looks back over at her, curiosity in his features as he asks the question - ] So how is it you've never had a picnic before?
[She's pleased when he enjoys the wine. She takes a sip and helps herself to another pastry, this time, a mini lemon tart with a adorable dollop of merengue. She bites into it and sighs at the sweet and tart flavor of it. Licking her lips, she waves off his praise.] I wasn't sure if you'd like red or white, so I took a guess. You don't strike me as the type to like overly sweet things. There pretty pastries aside!
[She actually really enjoys the way he talks. He drops F-bombs like an art. They perfectly emphasizes his words and encompasses his feelings. She giggles a little because the pastries are pretty amazing. Once the lemon tart is polished off, she picks up a sandwich. His question is met with a thoughtful shrug.]
I dunno. I guess I've never got around to it? Too busy getting into exclusive clubs around the world or getting into some kind of trouble with the Yakuza or drug lords. I'm kinda realizing more and more that it's the little things in life, you know?
[She gives him a playful little pout and reaches over to sway at his arm. She even goes for her very best puppy dog eyes though she doesn't mind if he isn't swayed. He knows how to distract her.
By talking about her.
She lets out a little thoughtful sigh.]
That's hard to think about. I feel like I've done all kinds of things. And that's not just me rooting my own horn.
[Sorry, Alexis. Lalo has already decided how he wants her to get to know his family, and just like with everything else, nothing will sway him from how he wants to do things.
Even those truly adorable puppy eyes.
Anyway, he likes talking about her almost as much as she does. He leans into her as much as he can while driving, keeping one arm around her shoulders and one on the steering wheel.]
Yeah, yeah, I know. You've been around. I get it. [He's not just saying that. He believes her!] But... there's gotta be something. C'mon! Nobody's done everything.
[His arm around her shoulders is warm. She likes it. Alexis happily leans into him. It's a little distracting. Between the press of his body and the scent of his cologne, she finds it hard to focus. Especially since her eyes are drinking everything in sight as they pass it by. She nibbles on her bottom lip thoughtfully.
What she she never done? Why is that question so hard! Even the things she regret not doing like finishing high school and going to college have been accomplished.]
Well, I guess I never met a guy's family so soon. [She shoots him a mischievous look.]
You didn't specify! [Her words end on a squealing laugh at his nibbling. She shivers and pretends that she's trying to squirm away, but really she likes it. She's loving the speed. She's loving his attention.
He makes her feel so carefree. She's missed this feeling. She's been working way too hard. She needs this.]
[The squirming makes him grab on tighter, pulling her in closer. The squealing laughter encourages him and his grip on her side tightens, like he's trying to prevent her from escaping. As if she could go anywhere anyway.
As if she'd want to.
Behind them, there's the familiar shriek of the police sirens, red and blue lights rotating.
Uh-oh. Lalo grins at her through the rear view mirror.]
Think we might've found something you haven't done before, chica.
Alexis has made a full blown Pinterest board with party ideas. She's so excited by the idea of a Taylor Swift themed birthday party. It doesn't matter if it's for a little girl. She's got ideas pinned on drinks, food, party favors and decorations. She's even reached to the legend herself though she doesn't want to mention it to Richie just yet. She doesn't want to get his hopes up. Tickets are a a pain to get, but Taylor's always loved her fans especially the smallest ones. Alexis will use any connection to try and make something happen.
She arrives half past eleven in two tall heels and a pair of white shorts and her Eras tour t-shirt because of course she'd gone. It's been a spiritual experience for her. Truly. She'd taken Stevie and Twyla with her while David stewed in envy. A girls' trip, she'd insisted!
She rings Richie's doorbell, still in her phone. She's still actively adding ideas to her board. This is going to be the best party. Come hell or high water!
The time is 11:45 in the evening, and just like Richie feared, he sees Alexis outside his door by the time he gets home. Despite swearing under his breath, he regains his composure to the best of his ability, then calls out with a short-- "Yo."
There's a hint of tobacco stuck to his already undone suit (necktie gone, top buttons undone, jacket hanging off his fingertip and draped over his back), but he likes to think he still looks more cleaned up than usual. For some convoluted reason, he hopes Alexis thinks he looks cool in it.
"Sorry, I didn't keep you waiting, did I?" He's moving quickly to unlock the front door, though, pushing it open for Alexis to walk in. "Fucking post-shift meeting lasted longer than I thought."
His apartment's much cleaner than it used to be. Richie's trying to get his shit together to varying degrees of success.
Alexis gracefully swings around in her heels and sees him coming up to her. She beams at him, not minding one bit that he's just getting home. She doesn't mind waiting. She's been going through Pinterest and adding more great ideas to her board. She can't wait to show it to him. Richie cuts a nice figure in his suit. The laidback, undone look really works for him, so she tells him so.
"Look at you, Mr. Foxy!" she playfully catcalls him. She looks him up and done with a twinkle of approval in her eyes. She steps aside to allow him to open his door for them. "I can definitely work with this."
As far as styling him and who knows what else she means.
"Thank you!" she preens. She proudly smooths out her shirt. "I thought it was fitting!"
"Yeah," Richie says with a soft huff of a chuckle, "definitely fitting, Alexis." Then he closes the front door, leading her to the small table in the kitchen. There're folded napkins on either side and placemats, even if a meal isn't expected; Richie's been trying to put a little more order in his life these days, even if he doesn't necessarily need to.
He pulls a chair out, gesturing towards it. "Have a seat. I'll just be a second."
And once he's hung his suit jacket and settled most of his shit, he returns to the kitchen with a laptop that's placed on the table.
"You, uh, want anything? A drink, food?" Richie goes to his fridge, pulling a container and a bag of loaf bread out. "Was gonna make myself a sandwich out of some leftover chicken salad-- I haven't fuckin' eaten since lunch."
Alexis likes the neatness of the table. It feels fancy like a restaurant. She plops herself down in the chair and tries not ruin his hard work. She's pleased when he sets the laptop in front of her. She doesn't hesitate to log into her Pinterest account, so she can pull up her board and show him on a bigger screen. She hears him moving around, but when food is mentioned, it piques her interest.
She turns in her seat to look at him and sees him pulling out the container of chicken salad. "I could eat!" she chirps cheerfully. He has her full attention now. "You know, I always wondered when people in the food service industry got a chance to eat. Tom Colicchio told me that you guys don't really eat and mostly just survive on cigarette breaks and coke."
Richie mutters a "Tom Colicchio" so quietly he hopes Alexis doesn't hear it. It seems that no matter how often she has a new story for him, he'll never get used to it.
"If by 'coke' you mean 'pop', I'd say you're right." But a high octane life like a fucking celebrity chef's has Richie thinking that isn't what she meant. "Yes to the cigs, though. Jesus. Sometimes it's the only fucking way to stay sane working in a kitchen."
Buttering four slices of toast, those're popped into a toaster oven. Then he goes to wash some lettuce to add to the sandwich. The air about them immediately starts to smell appetising, but Richie's always thought butter was some kind of miracle ingredient.
"We get family meals, though," he offers, "before lunch and dinner shifts. So it's not like we go hungry-- all the stress just has that shit digesting, like, ten minutes into work.
"You don't get stressed like that doing your shit?"
